The election for the Car of the Year 2020 is approaching and we now know the list of seven finalists. Among them, the freshly renewed Peugeot 208 and Renault Clio. The Volkswagen Golf 8, whose marketing will take place in the spring, is eliminated.
Each year since 1964, a European jury of 58 journalists specialized in the automotive press meets to elect the one which will be the “Car of the year”. After having studied in October the complete list of 35 candidates , it is today that of the seven finalists that we discover.
The candidates selected for this 2020 edition are therefore the BMW 1 Series, the Ford Puma, the Peugeot 208, the Porsche Taycan, the Renault Clio, the Tesla Model 3 and the Toyota Corolla.
French stars Clio and 208 in competition
France is therefore represented by its two city stars, just renewed and already compared twice by us. La Clio has already won the title twice: in 1991 with the first generation and in 2006 with the third generation. Peugeot won the title in 2014 with the 308 and in 2017 with the 3008. Nothing is won for this match which promises to be close…
The electrified cars are also well positioned in the ranking, since we note the presence of Tesla Model 3, Porsche and Peugeot Taycan E-208, when the hybrid is represented by the Toyota Corolla. The BMW 1 Series is the only survivor of the brand which alone had four candidates: the Z4, X6 and X7 were ousted. The Volkswagen Golf 8 , which does not arrive in dealerships until March 2020, has also been eliminated.
One surviving SUV
Surprisingly, the SUV category is only very little represented despite the market and a large number of proposals on the previous list (Nissan Juke, Renault Captur, Skoda Kamiq, Toyota RAV4…). From now on, only the Ford Puma will defend the colors of this category. However, the last three editions have been won by SUVs: Peugeot 3008 in 2017, Volvo XC40 in 2018 and Jaguar I-Pace in 2019.
