Hybrid and electric cars: main advantages and disadvantages

Hybrid cars , plug-in hybrids and electric cars  promote sustainable mobility. They are vehicles powered by alternative energies that are completely changing the automotive sector.

As of 2040, the Government will not allow the registration and sale in Spain of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles with direct carbon dioxide emissions. A measure that will affect diesel and gasoline vehicles and will cause such vehicles to pick up.

Electric cars

The electric cars use one or more electric motors, so that the energy stored in rechargeable batteries is transformed into kinetic energy. They make almost all the energy produced by the engine moving, so the emissions they produce are not polluting.

The biggest disadvantage of these types of vehicles is their autonomy . A real average consumption can be about 20 kWh at 100 km , as reported by the OCU. Although little by little, they are evolving to increase it. The recharging systems they are equipped with take advantage of the braking and retention systems to produce electricity.

Currently, there are already electric cars on the market with high autonomy, such as the new Audi e-tron that can cover more than 400 kilometers on a single charge. Those yes, the high price of this type of cars means that there are still few vehicles powered by electricity that occupy the roads.

Hybrid cars

The hybrid vehicles , unlike electric, is characterized by a double motorization. On the one hand, they combine an electric motor , while on the other they use an internal combustion engine

Plug-in hybrids or PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) have an external charging system and are prepared so that they can be charged by connecting them to a plug. They also have a higher autonomy than normal hybrids. They allow to have a car with which to travel without the limitations of autonomy that an electrician presents. In addition, once the battery’s electric charge has run out , they can continue to circulate thanks to their gasoline or diesel engine.

The electric hybrids , also called HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is autorecargan. The electric motor is responsible for charging the battery using the energy generated and the combustion engine. Therefore, these hybrids are not plugged in.

As for the purchase price, as a general rule, plug-in hybrids tend to be more expensive than normal hybrids.

Both the hybrids and the electric ones have a series of advantages and benefits over those of combustion: free accessibility in large cities, discounts on the traffic tax and aids to favor the purchase of this type of cars.
